New York Times Partners with Amazon for AI Content Deal

"New York Times Partners with Amazon for AI Content Deal, Signals Shift from Litigation to Licensing"

The New York Times just inked a multi-year deal with Amazon to let the tech giant use its content across various AI platforms. This means you might see summaries or snippets of Times articles, along with stuff from NYT Cooking and The Athletic, popping up on Amazon products like Alexa. They’re also letting Amazon use their content to train its AI models. No word on the financial details, though.

This move comes after the Times took Microsoft and OpenAI to court in 2023, claiming they misused the newspaper’s content to train their AI systems. That lawsuit didn’t get dismissed, and other outlets like the New York Daily News and the Center for Investigative Reporting have jumped in with similar claims. But instead of fighting it out in court, more news organizations are now signing licensing deals with tech companies.

Amazon’s been going all-in on generative AI lately, trying to keep pace with players like OpenAI and Google. They’ve rolled out stuff like Alexa+, a souped-up version of their voice assistant with AI baked in, plus their Nova models, Trainium chips, a shopping chatbot, and a platform called Bedrock for third-party AI models. Pretty wild, right?
